I met Marshall Goldsmith in 1999. I decided there and then Marshall was the model of an executive consultant I wanted to be when I grew up! What I meant by that was, when I was brave enough to step forward in my consulting work, I wanted to present with the comfort Marshall presents, align ideas as easily, and make people feel as comfortable. I have followed and used his work in my work ever since. I have sitting on my desk his newest book, Triggers. I will review after I read.
Until then, if you have three minutes to invest it in watching the front end of this short video from Marshall you will learn a quick model to think about your next success. The video is actually seven minutes and very good, but you will get what you need in the first three.
Main question: Who is the You, you want to create?
Now look at your life and answer four questions:
Positive Change: What do you want to create in your life?
Positive Keep: What do you want to preserve in your life?
Negative Change: What do you want to change in your life?
Negative Keep: What might you want to change, but know it is staying (Mother-in-Law????)? This is the area for things you might not like but must accept so you are free to work in the other areas that will enhance your life. No need putting energy to an area that is not going to change.
I suggest you start with the Negative Keep list first. Once you clear out all those things that you keep wishing were different, but you have no ability to change, I believe you will have a lot of time left to create the positive change you desire.
