As a regular reader of my blog, have you found yourself wondering, “Where is Jada Yarbough?” Rest assured, Jada is okay but starting college has proven to be a prioritizing challenge. I honor and respect those times in life when things we like to do get moved aside, while things we must do take precedence. No ‘muster-bating’, just real life showing us what is important in the moment.
In Jada’s life it is starting college, for you it may be a job change, a cross-country move, a divorce, a marriage, a new baby, the death of a loved one, an unwanted diagnosis, a car wreck, an insurance issue of any kind, or something as lovely as the introduction of a new love into your life. The list is easy to expand upon. Moment by moment, life seems to give us opportunities to prioritize and re-prioritize again, what really matters. It is at exactly at all those times of life that positive psychology-based life skills can come to the rescue.
1. Daily Reflective time to gain insight into what is important without all the noise — and other people sharing with you what they think you must be doing.
2. Savoring the Moment — for the good, experiencing the event in the moment; for the not so desirable, the appearance of unknown support. For all situations the realization that this too shall pass, whether it is a good ‘this’ or a not so good ‘this’.
3. Community and Gratitude. No matter the life change, there are always other people around. Notice them, accept their support, and be grateful.
Dr. Success Challenge: Have you sat in daily reflection yet today? Are you savoring this moment? Do you see the support that is all around you? Have you been grateful for all that is, no matter what ‘it’ is?
Really enjoyed this, Andrea. Good tips for those new to Positive Psychology, and a good reminder for those who are already embracing and practicing it.
Thank you Alice. What I have been working a lot with currently is how we need to continually not only be willing to learn, but be a state of relearning at all times.
