Whoever said “you can’t teach and old dog new tricks,” lied!
Recently, this old dog learned a new trick in the word, adulting.
Adulting (v): to do grown up things and hold responsibilities such as, a 9-5 job (heaven forbid), a mortgage/rent (think AirBnB ownership), a car payment, or anything else that makes one think of grownups!
The real purpose of a conversation I had recently with Kaitlin Kellogg during a Serving Your Success webcast was to explore what a perfect day looks like at different ages. The exercise I suggest you do is the same one I gave to her. Answer the following questions:
- Think about your perfect leisure day. Think of every detail. What are the top 5 things you are doing in this imaginary, perfect day? (Kait starts the exercise at 2:00 mark.)
- Now think 20 years out. If you are 25, you are now 45. If you are not 25, just do the math! What does your perfect day look like? What has changed? What is the same?
- Next think 40 years out. You are now 65. What does your perfect leisure day look like?

Some points in the conversation I believe you will find interesting:
13:00 – I learn about Adulting.
15:40 – Is there really a difference between the generations?
21:00 – Adulting meets aging well.
23:00 – The challenge to our positive emotions of assigning meaning where there is none.
24:30 – A real life example of synchronicity.
The internet philosopher, Anonymous, defined hell as the last day of your life when the person you BECAME meets the person you COULD HAVE become. There is one additional exercise I would suggest you do to close the gap between those two points. Answer the following question every single day:
Today, if you knew for an absolute fact you only had one year to live, what would you be doing?
What I learned by the end of my conversation with Kait Kellogg is that to age well you do the same things you do to live well, no matter what your age. You incorporate good self-care, you find work that feels like play, and you have a community to celebrate the ups and downs of life. That is how adulting evolves into aging well (33:30 point starts that conversation).
Enjoy every moment. Adulting meets Aging Well sooner than you expect.
